May 5th, 2011 — Crime Caper, Romantic
IMDB: The Thomas Crown Affair
Basic Plot: A rich billionaire decides he’d rather steal art than buy it, but a seductive insurance agent sets out to retrieve the painting.
Outburst: A glorious crime caper movie, too bad the leading lady does nothing for me and the sparks are pretty much nonexistent. Not my ideal ending, but quite satisfactory overall.

/DVD — If you like a witty, rich bad-boy with the mythical heart of gold, this movie’s for you. One of the few movies to portray a mature woman as a seductive siren.

April 18th, 2011 — Comedy, Drama, Romantic
IMDB: Steel Magnolias
Basic Plot: Drama revolving around the lives of a group of close-knit Southern ladies. Based on the play, which is based on a true story.
Outburst: This is such a classic tale it entered into the vernacular and is what every Lifetime Movie aspires to be like. I feel like I’m on vacation with the Deep South portion of my extended family.

/DVD — If you like chick-flick dramas but don’t want to use up an entire box of tissues, this movie is lighthearted enough for everyday watching. Great for ladies who love the Southern belle ideal.

April 15th, 2011 — Drama, Romantic
IMDB: The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Basic Plot: In 1968, the lives of a womanizing Czech doctor, his wife, and his mistress, are interrupted when the Soviets invade.
Outburst: Unlike a book or life in general, love and war cannot be intermingled in equal measure within a movie. It can be a romance with a backdrop of war, or a war movie with elements of romance. Philosophy rarely translates to the big screen at all. Such a disparate composition does disservice to the viewer and will not hold your attention for the full three hours this movie takes to convey its multitude of ideas.
— It’s a political war movie with brief elements that smack of soft-core porn. Sociology nerds may like this, but I feel they will covet the book more.

April 13th, 2011 — Biography or Based on Truth, Drama, Foreign with Subtitles, Romantic
IMDB: Yossi & Jagger
Basic Plot: A romantic interlude between two Israeli soldiers stationed at a remote outpost on the Lebanese border.
Outburst: Service in the Israel Defense Force is mandatory for both men and women, and gays may serve openly, making this movie very different from your average tortured LGBT indie drama. You’ll need to pay close attention. This movie is very short, very condensed, and the subtitles flash by quickly.

— It’s fucking brilliant, but very niche. If you like LGBT movies with adult themes and bare-bones indie films, you will be ruined for any other film after this. If movies without Steadicams make you nauseous, move on.

March 29th, 2011 — Comedy, Romantic
IMDB: The Treatment
Basic Plot: NYC boy’s school English teacher in therapy for relationship issues falls for young widow.
Outburst: It’s billed as an independent romance and/or an independent comedy, but only because it’s independent of both romance and comedy. I feel as if I’ve spent the last hour and a half masturbating to the works of Freud.
— You’ll only like this movie if you can identify with a stereotypical uninspiring English teacher or if you have a penchant for awkward wit.
March 28th, 2011 — Drama, Fantasy, Romantic
IMDB: The Fountain
Basic Plot: A metaphysical tale intertwining fantasy, folklore, and romance as a man seeks to be united with his true love. The film weaves together three ages in three parallel storylines.
Outburst: This is less a movie than a symphony of feeling that happens to be in film format. It’s a blossoming of the trials of love decorated in mythology.

/DVD — You will appreciate this movie best if you have a strong philosophical background. It’s also one of the movies that grows more meaningful over time and a second viewing.

March 27th, 2011 — Drama, Foreign with Subtitles, Romantic
IMDB: Guzaarish
Basic Plot: A former magician fights to end his life after an accident leaves him a quadriplegic.
Outburst: It’s a drama, but the main character is too quirky for pity and sadness. It’s a romance, but without any sex. Being an Indian movie, there is music and some dance, but this is no traditional Bollywood production. The film is beautifully constructed, more inspirational than depressing, and one of the most visually arresting movies I’ve seen in quite some time.

— Interested in the debate over the human right to die? This is a must see. You will also enjoy this movie if you appreciate visual artistry or bittersweet romance.

February 21st, 2011 — Comedy, Romantic
IMDB: Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi
Basic Plot: Coming of age for a somewhat awkward but well-meaning boy.
Outburst: No one can kibbitz like a dysfunctional Israeli Jewish family. The first ‘sexual’ encounter was so awkward I had to walk away or stop breathing (laughing too hard).

— All the guys who started out awkward will get a cringe and a laugh from this film. This is a cutesy coming-of-age foreign romance as well, so it makes for an entertaining at-home date night.

January 6th, 2011 — Musical, Romantic
IMDB: Singin’ in the Rain
Basic Plot: As a silent film production company transitions to ‘talkies’, the leading male falls for the girl who provides his co-star’s voice.
Outburst: This is a classic movie everyone should see at least once. In general, I can’t stand old movies, but I’m still gently humming the tunes.

/CULT — By today’s standards, it drags a little in parts, but it is still a must see. If you are classically trained in music or dance and have not elevated this film to its proper cult-icon status, you are in the wrong line of work.

December 30th, 2010 — Foreign with Subtitles, Horror, Romantic
IMDB: Let the Right One In
Basic Plot: Bullied kid gets a crush on his new neighbor, who happens to be a vampire.
Outburst: The actors seem stilted. It is hard to say if it is from bad acting or if kids in Sweden act that way normally. Some interestingly creepy scenes.

/DVD — If you like vampire romance and are immune to vague overtones of pedophilia, this movie is right for you. Goths will want to add it to their collections.
